My Background

My name is Hayden Henuset. I created the Canada-U.S. Planning Guide to help Canadian expats better understand the financial planning issues that can arise when life, work, assets, and family cross the Canada-U.S. border.

My background is in financial planning and wealth management across both Canada and the United States. I began my career in Winnipeg, Manitoba, as a financial advisor and planner, where I worked directly with clients on planning, investments, insurance, registered accounts, and long-term financial decisions.

In 2023, I moved to Los Angeles and continued my career in the U.S. registered investment advisory space. I currently work with One Capital Management LLC, a U.S.-based registered investment advisor with cross-border planning expertise.

After moving to the United States, I saw firsthand how different the two systems can be and how easily important details can be missed when Canadian and U.S. financial lives overlap.

I have worked with issues involving Canadian registered accounts, U.S. investment accounts, retirement planning, account transfers, estate documents, tax coordination, currency considerations, and the operational details that often sit behind good financial planning.

This site is built from that perspective.

It is not meant to replace personalized advice from qualified financial, tax, legal, or accounting professionals. Instead, it is meant to help Canadians in the U.S. understand the questions they should be asking before making decisions.

Cross-border planning is rarely about one account or one investment. It is about coordination.

A Canadian rental property, RRSP, TFSA, non-registered account, U.S. retirement plan, equity compensation package, estate document, or tax filing can all be individually manageable. The complexity comes from how those pieces interact across two countries.

The purpose of this guide is to make those interactions clearer.

Areas I Write About

  • Canadians moving to the United States
  • Canadian assets held by U.S. residents
  • RRSP, TFSA, FHSA, RESP, and non-registered account considerations
  • Canadian rental property ownership while living in the U.S.
  • Currency and cross-border cash flow
  • U.S. retirement accounts and investment planning basics
  • Equity compensation and high-income planning
  • Estate planning issues for cross-border families
  • Common mistakes Canadians make after moving south

My Core View

Good financial planning is not just about picking investments.

It is about making sure decisions fit together.

That is especially true for Canadians living in the United States, where two financial systems can create tax, legal, investment, estate, and reporting issues that are easy to overlook.

The goal of this site is to provide clear, practical education so readers can have better conversations with the professionals advising them.
